The Izu Peninsula in Shizuoka, offers stunning natural scenery, including beautiful beaches and golden sunsets over the Pacific Ocean, as well as a variety of gourmet seafood exclusive to the region.
Many Japanese people think of the Izu Peninsula as a hot spring resort area due to past volcanic activity. One resort area to draw honeymooners to, is Kawazu, an onsen resort located 2 hours 30 minutes from Tokyo by train.
What can you experience in Kawazu?
Sakura
Kawazu-zakura in Kawazu Town is in full bloom in February every year as the cherry blossoms are one of the first to bloom in all of Japan, due to the characteristic of the trees and warm climate. There are 8,000 cherry trees in Kawazu and so “The Kawazu Cherry Blossoms Festival” is a wonderful and vibrant event to experience.
Beaches and Waterfalls
Imaihama Beach is one of the most beautiful shoal beaches in Izu and located a 3-minute walk from Imaihama Kaigan Station. The beach is near many ryokans and guesthouses.
Kawazuhama Beach offers leisurely sea-bathing, as not so many people come here even during the high season, it is conveniently located about a 3-minute walk from Kawazu Station.
Kawazu Nanadaru - The Seven Waterfalls of Kawazu – visitors can enjoy a stroll along the walking trail and view the beautiful waterfalls here.
Onsens
There are more than 30 hotels, ryokan (Japanese style inns) and guesthouses in the Kawazu area. The wonderful thing is that most of the hotels and ryokan have their own hot spring source so that guests can enjoy natural onsen (hot spring) during their stay. Accommodation can vary from authentic traditional ryokan to western style hotels.
