DTH Travel: A Renaissance in Responsible Travel

Category: News Stories

A new era of travel is here! This 2025, regenerative travel is set to take centre stage, offering travellers the opportunity to leave destinations better than they found them. More than just minimising impact, this approach focuses on restoring ecosystems, empowering local communities, and fostering cultural preservation.

This month, we invite you to discover how this new chapter of responsible travel is making waves across Asia — and how you can be part of this movement. Let’s explore the most inspiring experiences that align with this vision.

Thailand: Cultivating Sustainability with Indigenous Innovations
General Manager Stefan Bruns introduces a journey that connects travellers with Thailand’s agricultural roots. Khum Lanna in Phrao District is more than a retreat; it’s a deep dive into sustainable rice farming, where visitors gain hands-on experience in traditional yet ingenious cultivation techniques.

Beyond the rice fields, explorers engage with local families, cook traditional dishes like mango sticky rice, and see firsthand how age-old farming wisdom remains crucial to sustainability today. “The surprising takeaway is that the best farming innovations are often the simplest — rooted in generations of knowledge and kept alive through experiences like this,” Stefan shares.

Malaysia: Rewilding Borneo
In Malaysia, General Manager Renee Osman highlights a conservation-driven adventure through TaWOW! – A Conservationist Gem in Borneo. Designed in partnership with 1StopBorneo Wildlife, this five-day experience brings travellers up close with Borneo’s rare wildlife and invites them to take part in firsthand ecological efforts.

Led by expert conservationists, this journey includes:
• Guided rainforest walks, where travellers encounter gibbons, hornbills, and the elusive red leaf langur.
• Exploring the tallest tropical tree trail in Tawau Hills Park.
• A mangrove cruise, spotting endangered Irrawaddy dolphins and proboscis monkeys.
• Visiting INIKEA’s reforestation project, where clouded leopards and slow lorises are monitored.

“This isn’t just a tour,” says Renee, “it’s a way for travellers to give back to the land, ensuring Borneo’s wonders thrive for generations to come.”

Cambodia: A Story of Lotus Strength and Women Empowerment
In Cambodia, Assistant Managing Director Villy Om shines a light on The Lotus Silk Farm near Siem Reap, where the resilience of the lotus mirrors the strength of the women it supports.
Here, travellers witness the entire process of transforming lotus flowers into silk while participating in hands-on workshops to craft lotus yarn bracelets, seed jewellery, and even lotus incense sticks. Explorers can end their visit with a tranquil boat ride through lotus fields and a rooftop tea lounge experience.

“The beauty of Cambodia isn’t just in its landscapes,” Villy shares, “it’s in the hands of the women shaping their futures through this delicate craft.”

Sri Lanka: Ethical Elephant Encounters
In Sri Lanka, Managing Director Suranjith De Fonseka highlights the country’s dedication to ethical wildlife tourism. One of the standout experiences is a visit to the Elephant Transit Home (ETH) in Udawalawe, a sanctuary for rehabilitating orphaned elephants before releasing them into the wild.

Travellers can also support conservation through:
• The Kosgoda Turtle Conservation Project, protecting endangered sea turtles.
• Marine mammal viewing in Mirissa, conducted with strict ethical guidelines.

“Sustainability isn’t just a choice—it’s our responsibility,” Suranjith states. “By choosing ethical experiences, we ensure that Sri Lanka’s wildlife and communities thrive together.”
