Travel and tourism have the incredible potential to be a force for good, offering travellers the chance to immerse themselves in the culture and beauty of the places they visit, while providing local communities with much-needed economic opportunities. A perfect example of this in action came during a recent Semester at Sea trip to Borneo managed by the team at Destination Asia in Malaysia.
In collaboration with Kinabatangan River Lodge, Destination Asia invited a selected group of participants to Sabah, where they were warmly welcomed into local homes. The group was treated to a traditional, authentic meal, prepared using fresh regional produce and spices by the local people themselves. This culinary experience not only gave visitors a taste of the region’s flavours but also showcased the incredible hospitality and traditions of the community.
After lunch, the group visited Dr. Wong Siew Te, affectionately known as Papa Bear and founder of the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre. The visit offered valuable insights into the conservation efforts surrounding sun bears while contributing to the centre’s important work. The group left with a deeper understanding of the region’s wildlife and the conservation efforts that protect it.
This trip proved to be both educational and enriching, offering travellers a unique opportunity to learn while contributing positively to the local community’s development and well-being.
